Wheel building

Demystify the art of Wheel Building.

Cycle Confident already teach students to build wheels as part of our City & Guilds professional mechanics training.

Taking C&G standards and our teaching experience we have developed this 2 day course to take students from minimal prior knowedge to be able to build a wheel from scratch to the minimum standard that is expected in the industry.

We aim for you take away the knowledge, resources and confidence to tackle selecting your own components, calculate spoke lengths and build your own wheel after you've left the workshop.

On Day 1 -

Working within our accredited, fully equipped training workshop in Oval you will learn first about materials and components; then go on to rim, hub and frame compatibility.

We compare lacing patterns and methods before showing you how to calculate spoke lengths for different hubs and rims for any wheel set. You will be working on wheels from our workshop and practice measurements more than once so the knowledge will be useful for a long time after the training.

You will go on to lace the spokes to hub and rim, more than once.

On Day 2 -

Having dreamt about wheels all night you will come in fresh to learn about truing and tensioning.

You will learn and then practice how to properly tension and pre stress a wheel to prevent damage and reduce problems down the line.

You will practice tensioning and making the wheel true to the tolerances expected across the bike industry.

You will then stand back, marvel at your brilliance and go home basking in the glow of new skills learnt and having conquered the dark art of wheel building.
